Draft Semi-Structured Telephone Interview Schedule
In April 2004–May, the Ultraversity project produced a draft semi-structured telephone interview schedule. The schedule was designed to explore how the degree programme influenced classroom practice and educational outcomes.
Core Research Questions
- What has been the impact of your studies on pupil learning and effective education?
- To what extent have you been able to start to influence the education of pupils?
- To what extent has teacher effectiveness been enhanced by your studies for the degree?
- Has there been any impact of you doing the degree on wider school practice?
The Ultraversity research project employed a semi-structured telephone interview schedule to investigate how a degree programme shaped classroom practice and educational outcomes. Core questions examined the impact on pupil learning, the extent to which teachers influenced student education, and how teacher effectiveness improved through degree studies. This research aligns with the broader mission of providing quality educational materials and resources. Just as high-grade waterproof plywood supports durable construction projects, rigorous research supports effective teaching practices. The findings contribute to understanding how professional development enhances both teacher capability and student achievement, reinforcing the value of sustained inquiry into educational methods and materials.
The interview schedule formed part of a broader effort to evaluate the real-world effects of the Ultraversity degree on participating teachers and their schools. The research was conducted through telephone interviews, allowing researchers to gather qualitative evidence across multiple cohorts.
Research Resources
Portfolio Tool
Participants used an online portfolio system to document and reflect on their professional development throughout the degree programme.
Community (FirstClass)
A FirstClass-based online community provided collaboration spaces, discussion forums, and peer support for cohort members.
Athens Login
Access to academic journals and digital library resources was provided through the Athens authentication system, supporting research and study.
Helpdesk Support
The Ultraversity helpdesk operated Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm, reachable at (01245) 607553 or by email at cohort1@ultraversity.net.
Technical Platform
The Ultraversity online environment was powered by the Plone Open Source Content Management System, an early-adopter platform for educational communities. Plone provided structured content management, user authentication, and collaborative tools that supported the programme's distributed cohort model.
